Yes...
I did not know it existed until I saw a Tbhp classifieds Advert.
Sometime in 09' I started to look out for a Used Auto Hatch for wife, she just could not get a hang of clutch system! But prices were 2ish Lacs and IIRC Samurai sold his Santro AT to Jaggu and a drive shaft was super expensive compared to the normal satro. (20k ish vs 4k ish)... these things put me off and also the eternal Indian mentality of AT giving sub-10Kmpl.
Fastforward to Mar2014 and I saw a Tbhp classifieds Ad for a M800 AT in coimbatore for 55,000Rs. Called up my wife and she said at least she need not be bothered about banging a expensive 2Lac hatch while learning to drive.
Spoke over phone to seller and I said without driving the vehicle and going by just the pics I would offer a MAX of 45,000Rs and promised to buy it outright without seeing the car in person.
Always a risk, but how much could go wrong in a M800. Agreed the slush box was a suspect, but I was ready to throw in 45K going by the pics. I lost the for-sale pics, it actually looked pretty neatly kept.
Seller was stuck to no-negotiation, rare car, blah blah, and I kept calling him everyday after my lunch on way back from food court
After 5 days he said he had a 'party' who offered him a 100Rs Token advance and never bothered to take the '100rs' back - Lol...
Seller sounded frustrated and only said firmly 'not a rupee less than 45k' - I said thats what I said a week ago on friday without seeing the car. So me and my mechanic took a night bus ride to Tirupur (seller said to meet there) and landed at day break. Met the seller, checked the docs, handed the 45K and topped up petrol to the brim and started the un-certain drive 350~ Kms back to Hosur.
Things we noticed while checking out the car.
1) Almost O.E condition from July-1990.
2) Japan plastics all over
3) Few dents thanks to a bad driver!
4) 3Cyl Petrol engine was smooth in power delivery except for a rough head noise. Head needed 'attention'
5) Engine had back compression, we were ready for a rings job
Seller claimed car gave 16+ Kmpl and we did a behind him!!
Had a HARD time controlling the left arm and leg from doing something stupid and me and mech had a fun drive back to hosur in this little car. I was actually surprised how 'silent' the body was after 24 years it hit the roads. Mikuni Carb said Made In Japan, so did a lot of other parts, I was actually beginning to feel this 'whole' car was actually put together in Japan as a CBU on special order??
Beyond 80KmPh we could feel the tyres wobbling like crazy thanks to front suspension needing rebuild. Tyres were the old BIAS Ply and front had a different set than the rear, so we didnt push beyond 80.
I couldnt make out the 2Speed or 3Speed Auto Box (How to find out?), but the 'top' gear engages only after 45ish Kmph. I read on some other indian auto forum the 87-92 M800 AT were made to order for 'specially abled' people on proving proof of disability from govt doctor and there was some 25% subsidy on the cost of the car. Once Maruti realized how easy it was to get a fake doc letter, they stopped this scheme (again, thats what the net says).
So after a long and slow (for highways) drive me and mech reached hosur and topped up fuel. The Little bugger did return 16Kmpl on petrol on highways!!
